I tried to hang the butterfly so you can see it is two sided, it is hard to see but take my word for it. Pretty colors yellow, blue and a very muted lavender it is 9x10 and sells for $25.00. This is Honel who first met Father Marc in Camp Perrin in 1998. His mother lived in Port au Prince and because he had no father he took care of his 4 younger brothers . He started by making Christmas cards to bracelets and now metal crafts. The group is working on a forming a cooperative among themselves, one is good at design, one at painting, another cutting the patterns so all in all it has been a learning experience for all of us. He is here holding a candy cane ornament and angel.

Sammy on the top and Jean Remy are brothers. When Sammy was 7 and Jean Remy was 6 they were brought to an orphanage in Port au Prince because their parents could not take care of them. It was operated by Catholic sisters and the boys remember all of their names . When they were 12 they were put out on the street and there they survived until they worked their way to Cayes . Their sister introduced them to Father Marc three years ago and they have been there since. Their talent was discovered and they have been making crafts and a lot of the articles on the blog are their creations. Here Sammy is cutting out stars with a hammer and chisel ( I think). Not too easy to do. Jean Remy is making a star three dimensional. Sammy is now 19 and Jean Remy 18.

The moon and the star are 3 inches and there are 26 stars and 10 moons. These are the angels that are ready for sale. Blue, pink, green , the one with the spots is a brownish black color and there are some that are unpainted . They can be hung on a Christmas tree by using an ornament hanger there is a little hole in the end of the wing for that purpose. See below for ordering instructions. The figure seen here is a very important part of the 1804 Revolution when Haiti won its independence from France. The troops were alerted by the blowing of the conch. Honel is the artist who crafted this piece. It sells for $25.00 and is 18x 6. As always pay pal is the easiest way to go.

The first phase in the finishing is to put a coat of rust proofing on the pieces called an oxidant and then paint the pieces white to await the final colors. There is a very involved process that takes place to create a painted piece and it is done in the small confines of a room or on the small porch. We are hoping to raise enough money to build a workshop where the artisans can create and sell their works in one place.

When the boys start making butterflies they were small flat pieces but as you can see they have come a long way in a couple of years. Now they are making two sided figures and it gives some depth to the work. On September 24th the children and parents of Assumption School in Wood-Ridge, New Jersey opened their hearts and wallets to support the arts and crafts department of Pwoje Espwa. This would not have happened without the support of school principal Dr. Aileen Gianelli and teacher Irene Milatz. The children were instumental in arousing interest and helping on the day of the sale. Many thanks to all; Susan, Gloria, Emily,Gene, Joe and Carol. Gee it sounds like I just won an Academy Award. Jonas Jenty is 17 years old and has been with Father Marc for many years. I met him on my first trip to Haiti in 2002 along with his brother Ronald who works at Castel Pere in the woodworking department. Jonas has remained a special friend all these years.

Jonas is the master of the beaded bracelets and necklaces. He makes them from multicolored beads and sometimes colored stones. Many of my friends have bought them for their grandchildren and the kids love them. The necklaces and bracelets are pictured elsewhere on this blog.

Now that we are flying in and out of Les Cayes I can always expect Jonas to be at the small airport to greet me .

This is Sammy, he has an incredible enthusiasm for his work. He welcomes new ideas and is always open to suggestions on how to make his craft more desirable. When Sammy came to Pwoje Espwa his raw talent was discovered and nurtered. Now a lot of the creative genius comes from him. When I left in March he was struggling with the end of the semester exams and I am sure he did well.

The arts and crafts department recently moved out to Castel Pere and more kids are enjoying the satisfaction that comes with creating. The older kids are an inspiration for the younger ones, giving them hands on experience in the creative process.

You can help by purchasing the crafts and thus giving the teens a sense of pride. There are lots of choices so peruse the blog and hopefully find something for you or your loved one.

Here is a picture of Makenson in the workshop at La Madonne. As you can see from this picture the working conditions aren't the greatest yet the kids manage to come up with some beautiful jewelry. Good news for all of you who were waiting for a chance to buy items handcrafted by the boys of Espwa. I have in my possession many small sun/moon combinations in various colors, there are some with green moons, blue and a shade of gray. There is a fastener on the back where a dowel can be inserted and then displayed in your garden. A wonderful addition to the daffodils and crocuses. They are 6" in diameter and cost $15.00

The sun disc pictured here is the piece de resistance of the entire collection. Samuel crafted it froman oil barrel and it has the patina of an antique piece of art. It is 15" in diameter and is priced at $50.00. It took Sammy a day and a half to complete.

Another Beauty

Samuel worked very hard to create this wreath and butterfly. It is 21 inches high and 19 inches long. It is a good buy at $30.00. Look closely at the butterfly and see how intricate the color patterns resemble the real thing. The parrot pictured here is very colorful as you can see. He or she(Ican't tell) sells for $10.00 and is 10 inches long. There is a smaller version of 5 inches for $5.00. This tablecloth was handcrafted by Madame Perpetue from Camp Perrin who is a friend of the ladies at Castel Pere. She hand cut and sewed the flowers and these lovely tableclothes can be ordered in any size and any color. Since these are handmade to your taste they may take a little longer than you would expect. Every creation needs a creator. Meet Samuel working on a new design. I haven't seen this one yet but as soon as I get a picture I will post it for all to see. He is so talented that all one needs to do is describe what you want and he has it sketched on paper before you know it; therefore all the crafts can be personalized to your specs. Just let me know and we will do it. As you can see he enjoys what he is doing and it shows in his work.
